We all have an idea of what the perfect week would look like. For me, an ideal week is about finding the right balance between work, personal goals, family, fitness and the little things that make life enjoyable. It’s about being productive without feeling overwhelmed, making progress towards my ambitions and finding time to recharge.
Life doesn’t always go to plan, of course, but having a picture of my ideal week gives me something to aim for. Whether it’s making progress at work, planning my next outdoor adventure or spending quality time with my Jack Russell, Austin, these are the things that help me feel fulfilled.

Organised and Productive Workdays
An ideal week starts with an organised work schedule. I’d like to have a clear plan for each day, with tasks prioritised, deadlines met and projects moving forward without unnecessary complications. No technical problems, no wasted hours trying to fix systems and, ideally, no last-minute surprises!
Being productive isn’t simply about ticking everything off a to-do list. It’s also about having the headspace to be creative, develop new skills and think about where I want my career to go next.
I’d love to receive some positive professional news, whether that’s hearing back about a job application, connecting with interesting people on LinkedIn or discovering a new opportunity that takes me in an exciting direction. Building my professional network and making meaningful career progress would make an already productive week feel even more rewarding.
Ultimately, I want my working week to give me a sense of achievement without leaving me too exhausted to enjoy my time outside work.
Staying Connected with My Mum
One thing that has become increasingly important to me is keeping in regular contact with my mum, who is now in her early eighties. Making sure we stay connected is something I want to prioritise, rather than leave until I happen to have a spare moment.
It’s funny how your priorities change as you get older. When I was eighteen, I was much more concerned about the next club night than what my mum was doing. At that age, there always seemed to be something more exciting happening, and keeping in touch with family wasn’t necessarily at the top of my list.
Things are very different now. I have a much greater appreciation of family, time and the importance of maintaining those connections. I want to make sure I’m in continual contact with my mum, including using LinkedIn and other ways of keeping in touch where appropriate.
An ideal week would include regular conversations, finding out how she’s doing and making time for the people who matter most. It’s a simple thing, but it’s easy for everyday responsibilities to get in the way unless you make a conscious effort.
Sometimes, the things that matter most aren’t the ones we would have prioritised when we were younger.

Running: Building Towards My Next Challenge
Running is an important part of my ideal week. It’s not just about fitness or burning calories; it’s about getting outdoors, clearing my head and having something to work towards.
I’d like to maintain a consistent running routine, gradually increasing my distance as my fitness improves. Rather than attempting to do too much too soon, the aim is to build endurance steadily, giving myself time to recover between runs and enjoy the process.
I also love having a challenge on the horizon. Planning my next hike or outdoor adventure gives me something exciting to look forward to. There’s always another route to explore, another stretch of coastline to discover or another personal goal to work towards.
For me, the fun is as much in the planning as it is in the actual adventure. Looking at maps, researching walking routes, checking what equipment I’ll need and imagining the places I’ll visit all help to keep my motivation going.
My ideal week would include a mixture of regular runs and time spent planning my next hiking challenge. Whether that means tackling a longer distance, exploring somewhere new or simply getting more consistent with my training, I want to keep moving forward.
The important thing is to enjoy the journey rather than focus exclusively on the destination.
Reading More and Adding Less to My Reading List
I’m always discovering another book I’d like to read. The problem is that my to-read list seems to grow faster than I can work through it!
An ideal week would include making time to sit down with a good book and actually finish something before adding another title to my ever-expanding list of books to read.
There’s always something tempting to click on, whether it’s a recommendation, a fascinating subject or a book that someone has mentioned online. Before long, I’ve added several more titles without making much progress with the ones already waiting for me.
I’d like to be more intentional about reading. That means choosing a book from my existing list, setting aside some quiet time and enjoying it without feeling that I should be doing something else.
Reading is a chance to step away from screens, discover different perspectives and give my mind a break from the constant stream of information.
My ideal week wouldn’t necessarily involve reading for hours every day. Even a little regular reading would be a satisfying achievement, particularly if it meant finally getting through some of those books I’ve been meaning to read for months.
Good Material by Dolly Alderton is next on my reading list. I’m not entirely sure what it’s about yet, but I know I’m in for another generous helping of Dolly, and that’s reason enough for me!

A Peaceful Day Off
A perfect week needs a proper day off. After a busy working week, I want time to relax without feeling guilty about not being productive.
My ideal day off would include:
- A long run: Getting outside, enjoying the fresh air and returning home feeling refreshed. Find running essentials here.
- A leisurely lunch: Going somewhere nice for a relaxed meal, enjoying good food without watching the clock.
- Time for creativity: Making space for embroidery, drawing, digital art or another creative project.
- Reading a good book: Making progress with my reading list rather than adding yet another title.
- A relaxing evening: Curling up with a good drama series or film and enjoying a quiet night in.
These simple pleasures help me recharge. They also remind me that not every hour needs to be productive or contribute towards a specific goal.
Sometimes, doing nothing particularly ambitious is exactly what you need.
Quality Time with Austin, My Jack Russell
My dog Austin is an essential part of my ideal week. He’s an energetic and slightly crazy! Jack Russell, so life with him is rarely dull.
I’d love to spend more time taking him on long walks, preferably somewhere new. Exploring different routes gives us both a change of scenery, whether we’re discovering a new park, following a woodland trail or heading towards the coast.
Walking with Austin is about more than exercise. It’s an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the outdoors and pay attention to the world around me. Dogs have a wonderful way of making an ordinary walk feel like an adventure, particularly when every new smell and unexpected encounter becomes the most exciting thing that’s happened all day.
I’d like to build more of these outings into my week, rather than always following the same familiar routes. A little research could uncover plenty of new places to explore together.
Of course, Austin’s enthusiasm doesn’t always make for a peaceful walk! But his energy and personality are part of what makes spending time with him so enjoyable.
Whether we’re heading out for a longer adventure or just taking a local stroll, quality time with Austin is firmly on my list of weekly priorities.

Staying Healthy Without Becoming Obsessed
Another part of my ideal week is looking after my health and keeping on top of household responsibilities.
I’d love to get the cleaning done without losing an entire afternoon to scrubbing, sorting and wondering how the house became untidy again so quickly. A little organisation throughout the week would make these tasks feel much more manageable.
I’d also like to be more mindful of what I eat, particularly when it comes to resisting the temptation of sweet treats at work. It’s easy to reach for something sugary when you’re busy, tired or simply looking for a quick pick-me-up. Preparing lunch in advance and packing it in a reusable lunch box is a simple way to stay organised, save money and make healthier choices during the working day.
Making healthier choices and seeing gradual progress with my weight-loss goals would be encouraging. At the same time, I don’t want healthy living to become a source of constant pressure.
Running, walking, eating well and getting enough rest should all contribute to a lifestyle that feels sustainable and enjoyable. There’s room for a treat or an indulgent meal, too. Balance is about the overall picture, not expecting yourself to get everything right every day.
My ideal week would leave me feeling that I’m taking care of myself without turning every decision into another task to complete.
A fantastic plastic-free alternative and a long-lasting investment that should see you well into the next decade.

Making Space for Art and Creativity
As an artist and writer, creativity is another important part of my ideal week. Between work, exercise and everyday responsibilities, it’s easy for personal projects to slip down the priority list.
I’d like to make more time for drawing, embroidery and developing new ideas, as well as writing for my blog. Creative work gives me an opportunity to explore subjects that interest me, experiment with different approaches and express ideas that might otherwise remain in my head.
I’d also like to spend time developing my digital art skills and exploring new ways to share my work online. That might mean creating a new piece, photographing an existing artwork or planning content for my blog and social media.
The important thing is to keep creating, even when I don’t have a finished project or exhibition in sight.
Not every creative session needs to produce something polished. Sometimes, experimenting, making mistakes and following an idea simply because it interests me is enough.
A week that includes time for creativity feels much more fulfilling than one spent entirely responding to other people’s priorities.

Final Thoughts: My Ideal Week Is About Balance
My ideal week isn’t about achieving perfection. It’s about creating a life in which work, relationships, health, creativity and adventure can coexist.
I’d like to feel productive in my working life, make progress towards my career goals, stay connected with my mum, maintain a consistent running routine and start planning my next hiking challenge. I’d also like to read more of the books already on my list, explore new places with Austin and make time for the art and writing that matter to me.
There will always be unexpected demands, unfinished tasks and days when things don’t go according to plan. That’s life. The aim isn’t to fit everything into every week, but to make sure the things that matter don’t continually get pushed aside.
Perhaps the biggest lesson is that our priorities change as we get older. The things that seemed important at eighteen can look very different decades later. Family, health, meaningful work, personal growth and the freedom to enjoy life’s simple pleasures take on a different significance.
For me, the perfect week is one that leaves me feeling I’ve achieved something, enjoyed myself and made time for the people and activities that give my life meaning.
What does your ideal week look like? Is it about getting ahead at work, spending more time with family, achieving a fitness goal or simply finding a little more time to enjoy life? I’d love to hear what makes a week feel perfect for you.
