Autumn is here, and for runners, this is arguably the perfect time of year to get out there.
The early weekend runs where you had to be out before the midday heat are now over. The temperatures are cooler, the air is fresher and you can finally head out without worrying about melting halfway around your route.
Of course, this is Britain, so there is one small problem: the weather.
One minute you can have blue skies and the next you’re running through a downpour. Autumn running means dealing with rain, wind, muddy trails and increasingly wet leaves.
So, as the summer running kit goes back into the cupboard, here are 10 autumn running essentials I’d put in my kit bag to get me through the season.
1. Lightweight Waterproof Running Jacket
If there’s one thing you need for British autumn running, it’s a decent waterproof jacket.
You don’t necessarily want something heavy. A lightweight, breathable running jacket that can cope with an unexpected shower is much more useful.
Ideally, look for something that packs down small enough to carry with you when the weather looks questionable—which, let’s face it, is most days in Britain.

A great throw-on option for autumn and winter runs when the weather turns wet, the Momentum 3-Layer Stretch Jacket combines lightweight waterproof protection with the comfort and flexibility of a softshell. Designed specifically for runners, it helps keep you dry, comfortable and moving in rain and wind.

2. Long-Sleeve Running Top
It’s time to start putting the short-sleeved tops to one side.
A lightweight long-sleeve running top is perfect for those cooler mornings when a T-shirt isn’t quite enough, but a full jacket would leave you overheating.
It’s also ideal for layering when temperatures really start to drop.

3. Running Leggings
There is something particularly satisfying about getting your legs covered again after a summer of short shorts.
Running leggings provide an extra layer of warmth without being bulky and are particularly useful on colder mornings and for autumn make sure you have full length to hand.
Look for breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that allows you to move freely.

4. Running Trousers
For men who simply won’t do running leggings, running trousers are the perfect alternative.
If even wearing shorts over leggings isn’t for you, choose a pair designed specifically for running—comfortable, breathable and relaxed without being overly loose.
Designed for fast-paced training, these lightweight woven stretch trousers deliver the freedom of a relaxed fit with the performance feel of race-day apparel, without the close fit of lycra.

5. Running Shoes with Good Grip
Here’s the big one: wet leaves.
They might look harmless, but a pavement covered in damp autumn leaves can become surprisingly slippery.
As well as checking that your running shoes still have plenty of tread, consider whether you need something with better grip for autumn trails and wet surfaces.
And if your current trainers are starting to develop holes, thinning soles or worn heels, autumn could be the perfect time for a new pair.
ASICS Trainers Gel-Quantum 360 VIII

6. Running Socks
Don’t underestimate the importance of good running socks.
Wet feet can quickly turn a pleasant autumn run into an uncomfortable one. Look for breathable, moisture-wicking socks that fit well and help prevent rubbing and blisters.
If you’re heading onto muddy trails, having a spare pair in your kit bag isn’t a bad idea either.
Blofield Double Layer Mid Length Anti-Blister Running Sock
For autumn running, mid-length socks are a smart choice. The double-layer design minimises friction against the skin, helping to prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable for longer.

7. Running Gloves
The first really cold morning can come as a shock after summer.
A lightweight pair of running gloves can make a huge difference when your hands are cold, particularly on early morning or evening runs.
Choose something breathable rather than overly thick, as you’ll probably warm up once you’ve got a few miles under your belt.
A great choice for autumn, they combine lightweight warmth with breathable, high-performance materials, keeping hands comfortable without the bulk of heavy winter gloves.

8. Running Hat
There’s a point in autumn when the sweatband you were using throughout summer suddenly isn’t quite enough.
A lightweight running hat can keep your ears warm without making you feel like you’re wearing a winter hat.
It’s also useful for keeping your hair and ears protected when you’re running in wind and rain.
KIPRUN Kiprun Adult Seamless Running Hat
Perfect for cold-weather running, this lightweight and comfortable hat helps keep longer hair securely in place. Its soft, cosy fabric delivers warmth without adding bulk.

9. Water Bottle
You may not feel as thirsty as you did in summer, but staying hydrated is still important, especially on longer autumn runs.
A soft flask is a great option, as it shrinks as you drink, meaning no annoying sloshing while you run.
Smaller 250–500ml flasks are ideal for cooler weather and can easily be tucked into a running jacket pocket or vest as you shed layers.
Great for autumn runs when you can carry less water, this compact bottle is an easy grab-and-go hydration solution. An elastic hand strap provides a secure grip, while the lockable teat helps prevent leaks when stored in a pocket during your run.

10. Audiobook
Sometimes the hardest part of a cold autumn run is simply getting out of the door. While music might be your usual running companion, having a motivational audiobook saved specifically for your runs can give you that extra reason to keep going—and perhaps even encourage you to run a little further.
