Flies of Beauty is a striking contemporary artwork created by North West-based artist Alison Little, showcasing an innovative combination of mixed media techniques, vibrant colour, and textured surface design. This uplifting piece of visual art reflects themes of transformation, resilience, and renewal, created during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.

Based in the North West of England, Alison Little is known for exploring experimental processes and creating distinctive artworks that combine traditional painting methods with contemporary techniques. A Unique Combination of Acrylic Techniques and Mixed Media Processes

Created on a reclaimed Dibond flat panel, Flies of Beauty measures 80 x 80 cm and is presented using a bespoke box mount, allowing the artwork to sit away from the wall surface and create a sense of depth and dimension.

The background was developed using acrylic pouring techniques, producing flowing layers of colour and organic movement across the surface. Alison then built upon these tones using a bamboo drip pen and dripping techniques, adding intricate textures and expressive marks that create depth within the composition.

The butterflies, central to the artwork’s theme, were produced through a vinyl cutting process. Acrylic paint was applied using a squeegee scraping technique, creating unique patterns and surface variations before each butterfly was carefully positioned onto the finished painting.

This combination of fluid acrylic backgrounds, handmade textures, and carefully constructed butterfly forms demonstrates Alison’s experimental approach to contemporary abstract art.

The Inspiration Behind the Butterfly Artwork

The concept for Flies of Beauty began shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic reached the UK. At the time, Alison was developing ideas and techniques within her sketchbook, unaware of the global crisis that was about to unfold.

The butterfly became a powerful symbol within the work — representing change, hope, endurance, and the possibility of transformation after difficult experiences.

During the pandemic, Alison was personally affected by the devastating impact of COVID-19. After contracting the virus several times and experiencing the loss of her partner to COVID, she faced an extremely difficult period. When she was well enough to return to creating art, she revisited the butterfly concept she had imagined earlier in the year.

The process of completing the artwork became part of her recovery journey. The bright colours, natural imagery, and uplifting energy within the painting reflect healing, strength, and the human ability to move forward through adversity.

Butterflies have long been associated with transformation and renewal, making them a fitting subject for Alison Little’s work. Through her use of colour, texture, and experimental methods, she captures the delicate balance between fragility and strength.
