Transitions: An Abstract Reflection on the Shift from Winter to Spring

Transitions is the latest abstract painting by artist Alison Little, capturing the emotional and visual shift between winter and spring. Through layered textures, subtle colour transitions, and organic forms, the artwork explores themes of change, renewal, and movement forward.

At its core, Transitions reflects a universal experience—the moment when one season ends and another begins. It represents leaving behind the harshness of winter while gradually embracing the growth and promise of spring.

The Inspiration Behind “Transitions”

The concept behind Transitions is rooted in the idea of change and transformation.

Winter often symbolizes stillness, hardship, and reflection. In this piece, the lighter background tones of lilacs and pale blues evoke icy frost, cold skies, and the emotional weight that can accompany the colder months.

These colours suggest:

  • Frost-covered landscapes
  • Quiet winter mornings
  • Harsh winds and storm-like conditions
  • The emotional resilience needed during difficult periods

As the painting evolves, darker organic forms begin to emerge, symbolizing the arrival of spring.

Symbolism Within the Painting

The dark, almost tree-like forms represent nature awakening after winter’s dormancy.

Although they appear somewhat barren, the subtle dotting of darker tones hints at early growth—small signs that new life is beginning to take hold.

This duality is intentional.

The painting is not fully winter, nor entirely spring. Instead, it exists within the delicate moment between seasons—a true transition.

Artistic Process and Techniques

Alison worked on Transitions over several months, completing the piece just as spring began to emerge.

The creative process evolved organically:

Topographical Beginnings

The painting initially developed in a topographical style, focusing on layered surfaces and textures. As the work progressed, the composition naturally formed a top and bottom orientation, which Alison chose to follow.

Wax Texture Techniques

A variety of melted wax techniques were used to create depth and texture throughout the piece.

These included:

  • Finely grated wax layered onto the surface
  • Wax dripped directly from a lit candle
  • Built-up textures using a silicon painting tool

Creating the Frost Effect

To produce the tree-like forms and frosted textures:

  1. The shapes were taped off using brown tape
  2. White acrylic layers were applied
  3. The result created a subtle frost-like finish, reinforcing the winter-to-spring theme.
