Fancy Dress on a Budget: How to Look Fabulous Without Spending a Fortune

Fancy dress parties are one of life’s great joys — a chance to be someone (or something) completely different for a night. But let’s be honest: dressing up can get expensive fast. Between costume hire shops, accessories, and that inevitable glass of red wine spilled mid-dance, it’s easy to spend more than you planned.

So, how can you look amazing without breaking the bank? Here’s your ultimate guide to cheap fancy dress ideas, creative themes, and a few cautionary tales along the way.

Don’t Spend a Fortune

It’s tempting to go all-out — but remember, most fancy dress costumes are a one-night-only affair. You’ll likely only wear it once, so set yourself a maximum budget of £20.

Avoid high-end hire shops that charge a small fortune for what is, let’s face it, literally fancy fabric and Velcro.

If your costume doesn’t survive the night (thanks to a burst seam or a spilled drink), you’ll be glad you didn’t spend a week’s wages on it.

Reuse and Re-imagine

With a little creativity, one outfit can go a long way. I once negotiated a single costume to serve multiple lives — it’s been Mary Magdalene, Maggy May, and even made an appearance at a Liverpool church event.

The trick? Choose versatile pieces that can be reworked for different characters. Try mixing and matching accessories like:

  • Take a hat as a start point for a costume.
  • Look at ways existing trainers could be worked into a fantasy themed outfit.
  • Consider purchasing a new item which can easily be used for dress-up then worn again. This versatile top from Kaiia can be used for themes around Americans, Cheer leaders and Taylor Swift then worn again and again.
  • See what you can pick up from your local charity shop, I got this great hat for only £5 to use for a suffragette costume for a writers event.

Struggling for Ideas? Start Simple

If you’re not the imaginative type, there’s no shame in borrowing from the classics. Fairy tales, film characters, and decades themes are always crowd-pleasers.

Need inspiration?

  • Troglodyte– a cave dweller-or a cave man or women for those of us who use more familiar terms. Take a Leopard print top and trousers and combine with a furry scarf.
  • A Black cat– get creative with a mask making kit.
  • Where’s Wally – Stripped Shirt – works every time (and even funnier if there’s more than one of you and a ‘Fat Wally’ will always get a laugh, and by the way everyone is fat compared to Wally unless your a lost skinny 9 year old boy).

If you’re truly stuck, open Pinterest or Google images and type “easy fancy dress ideas.” You’ll find endless inspiration — from superheroes to sandwiches.

Add the Finishing Touch with Makeup

Don’t underestimate how much costume makeup transforms your look!
Try:

  • Snazaroo face paints – safe, bright, and easy to clean off. Simply the best brand for face paints, longs lasting and very durable, I’ve had a tub of purple which I have used for many events for Reclaim the Night Marches to arts photography sessions.
  • Use what black eye make up you have then vamp it up like Amy Winehouse.
  • Don’t forget to stock up on make up remover as you will need it in the excess.

Word of Warning: Avoid Political Pitfalls

A fancy dress party should be fun, not front-page news. Think twice before dressing up as a controversial politician or public figure. Remember the backlash when Prince Harry wore that outfit? Exactly.

Similarly, maybe skip going as Margaret Thatcher to a miner’s event, or Liz Truss if you don’t fancy spending the night debating the economy. Some things are better left in history books.

Go for Decades — Always a Hit

When in doubt, go for a decade theme. The 80s and 90s are always easy to pull off. Hit your local charity shop or try online.

Grab some DIY craft supplies if you want to customise your outfit.

Just… maybe avoid certain looks (no “triangular front” men’s tracksuits, and definitely no Jimmy Savile revivals — ever).

The “R” Party That Was Better Without the Host

One of my favourite fancy dress stories? A friend once threw a birthday party where the theme was “Something beginning with R.” He barely showed up — truly a terrible host — but it was still one of the best nights ever.

People came as robots, rockstars, rabbits, and even a raccoon (me, after reworking an old cat costume). Proof that the guests — not the host — make the party.

Final Thoughts: It’s All About the Fun

Fancy dress isn’t about spending money or being perfect — it’s about imagination, laughter, and letting go for a night. Whether your costume costs £2 or £20, what matters most is the fun you have wearing it.

So go on — dig through your wardrobe, raid the charity shops, get creative, and don’t take it too seriously. Because the best fancy dress nights? They’re the ones where the seams split, the wine spills, and nobody cares.
