An extract:

The creation of a Rhino from disused car tires, creating a sculptural form which is natural in it’s representation but industrial in its choice of materials. Binding techniques used throughout the piece, tires deconstruction varied, prominent features such as the horn to demonstrate obvious use of car tires. Fluorescent cut vinyl to be used for the eyes and then in circular format to be spread across the body to emulate the texture of the Rhino’s skin tone and to to be a visible form in the nights lights. Approximately 1x 1.5 meters in size, free standing, structure filling process to be determined on creation of outer form.

The World Wildlife Organisation (WWF) indicate that there are very few Rhino’s left in natural habitat, of those who survive most are in National Parks and Reserves. In Asia, the Javan and Sumatran species of Rhino are critically endangered, a species of the Javan Rhino was declared extinct in Vietnam in 2011. Their status has been increased from endangered to vulnerable, although the Rhino is commonly poached for it’s horn it’s main threat is from loss of habitat.

De-forestation and the man’ domination of the natural world is highlighted by Tire Rhino, addressing global environmental issues. The man made car tire form drawing attention to state of affairs in terms of global warming. In Tire Rhino we present a natural Rhino made from a material which represents a major factor in its decline.
