A few extracts from the proposal I put forward for the Green Man festival to be held in South Wales this summer 2016:
Polythene and shredded Paper Form
Since 2014 Alison has been using polythene and shredded paper to create artworks, the first of these being Bi Polar B for 2014 World Mental Health Day exhibition held at the Williamson Gallery in Birkenhead. ‘Bipolar B’ is a vision of a female sufferer of Bipolar, its prime concern is to address Hyper-sexuality in sufferers. This is shown by the pose of the Art form, the figure showed with her legs sprawled wide open, the figure exaggerated towards the groin area. The figure is created using Polythene sheeting and shredded paper.
Other artworks using the techniques were Brain scape for World Mental Health Day 2015, exhibited at Unit 52 in the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool. A larger scale commission was created for Spectrum D in Derby: Act against Hate crime she replicated the figures using polythene sheeting and shredded paper with printed terminology to create a large scale installation. The installation to consist of a full size figure floor based and a broken wheel chair. The figure to be filled with statements about disability such as: impairment, unseen, exclusion from society, physical, mental, sensory and emotional. This was a very successful piece exhibited at the Guildhall theatre in Derby in October of 2015. More recent works: Art Stalker is to be exhibited in Berlin 2016. The intention is to create a ‘Green Man’ using polythene and green tones of fluorescent paper to stand 2.5 meters high at the festival.
Similar materials to be used to when making the other forms, a polythene almost body bag like form is created then compacted with shredded paper. The form is to be quite bulky in creation and to be 2.5 meters in height so it towers down on the festival goers. The shredded paper to be in green tones on the outer later and to incorporate florescent papers which will have a strong visual impact at night. Waterproof qualities of the polythene will allow for weather humidity which is likely to occur over the period. Potential for elements of foliage to be added to the outer layer of the ‘Green Man’ structure with similarities to those used in ‘Brain scape’. Although we are using modern materials and techniques such as polythene and shredded paper, the form appear quite organic in appearance often resembling bails of hay shaped into new forms.
The ‘Green Man’ is to have an internal supporting structure to cover the bottom half of the form, from the waist down. The struts are interned to continue down into the ground for approximately 1 meter, holes to be created and earth to be compacted around the form. The base of the legs to continued down into the earth. Form may be partially constructed on sight dependent on planning and other considerations.
