Liverpool’s festive season officially kicked off in true community style as Labour Councillors Billy Marrat and Lena Simic hosted their much-loved annual Labour Christmas Party on Monday 8 December at the Sandon’s Acorn Suite on Oakfield Road — just a stone’s throw from Anfield Stadium.
Doors opened at 11:30am, but the atmosphere felt more like a late-night celebration than a morning gathering. The cosy hum of laughter, music, sequins and festive chatter set the tone for what would become one of the most memorable community Christmas events of the year.

Festive Fashion: Sequins at Sunrise
Guests arrived looking ready for a Christmas night out — despite the early hour. From glittering dresses to bold Christmas jumpers, the room shimmered with seasonal spirit. Who says you can’t sparkle before noon?
Bingo, Banter & Councillor Billy at the Mic
The party truly kicked off when Councillor Billy Marrat stepped up to host the raffle and bingo. Known locally for his relaxed, arm-round-the-shoulder humour, Billy proved he’s as much an entertainer as he is a councillor.
Prizes had a distinctly Liverpool FC flavour — new kits, shirts, tours of the stadium — all eagerly claimed by guests hoping for a bit of festive luck.
And in classic Scouse humour, Billy paused mid-raffle to ask if anyone had a spare hearing-aid battery — “a red one, please” — adding with a grin that he hoped no Evertonian’ were within earshot.

The Alternative History
A Familiar Furry Anfield Face
Before even stepping inside the Sandon, guests were welcomed by a lively black-and-white cat — not quite a kitten, but a confident young stray who appears to have become an unofficial mascot of the area. It patrolled the car park, vocal and charming, as guests queued for their traditional turkey dinner.

Jam or Cream First? The Great Scone Debate
No Christmas party is complete without food — and no Scouse gathering is complete without debate.
The hot topic at the tables?
Jam or cream first on a scone?
The majority leaned “jam first,” insisting the cream was something to “play with on top.” A very diplomatic, very local conclusion.

Live Entertainment with Steve Jones
Entertainment legend Steve Jones soon filled the room with festive music. From Santa Claus Is Coming to Town to sun-soaked Benidorm classics, followed by smooth Drifters hits and even a Tom Jones flourish — his setlist had something for everyone.
The dance floor didn’t stay empty for long. A well-known “Big Fella” proved that dancing is definitely not just for the women, showing off his moves as he swept across the floor with surprising agility.

More Bingo, More Laughs
Billy wasn’t done yet — he returned as bingo caller, showing he certainly “had the balls” for the job. Some younger guests weren’t totally sure how bingo worked at first, but with a few friendly nudges they were marking numbers like pros.
One call brought a special chuckle:
“Downing Street — number 10!”
A reminder that even at a cosy local Christmas party, politics is never completely off the menu.

A Community Christmas Worth Celebrating

Here’s to next year’s celebration — and to the continued community connection that makes Liverpool so special.
