A Magical Mantle

Feel like being inventive for advent this year?

Try this eco, ultra-creative model for a more wholesome festive indulgence. All the indulgence of Harrods deluxe, but with the cost of a bag of sweets from your local discounters.

Made from a collection of jars, mainly spice in this example. Each jar was coated internally with thinned glass paint; however, acrylics or poster paints will have similar results. Paint pens were made use of to scribe the numbers: the central text silver, the outline a festive green.  A hand crocheted collar was rendered for each jar, using leftover yarn. A 5mm hook and double-knit yarn was used for the spice jars. Following a 20-stitch chain the designs were varied between double stitches and diversified effects. Scrap red papers were shredded and added to the bottom of the jars, finishing off with a treat!

Chocolates can vary, perhaps Celebrations or Quality Street introduces more ecological packaging during October. Healthier options have potential, possibly a mix with chocolate coated nuts. Alternatively, a grape or blueberry could be dropped in with the sweets on a daily basis. One treat for each child, adult and any furry friends, namely pets. A particular indulgence for Christmas day, the potential to let the children have them on Christmas Eve as the flurry of presents will take precedence on the big day.

Festive fun of making, jars which can be recycled or re-packaged for next year. A magical mantelpiece, the awe of visitors.

…..and er….eat your heart out Al-Fayed, Harrods has nothing on this deco!
