This is “Chris the Penguin”, a unique painted sculpture I created for the 2010 Go Penguin parade in Liverpool. Inspired by the legendary Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, this artwork combines sport, creativity, and community spirit in one striking design.
Commissioned by the Manchester Velodrome, Chris the Penguin was originally installed outside the Echo Arena Liverpool, where thousands of visitors admired him as part of the city-wide art trail. Later, he was proudly displayed at the iconic St George’s Hall, as shown in the image above.
The Go Penguin parade was a major cultural event in Liverpool, following the success of the Superlambanana sculptures. Each penguin was transformed by different artists, celebrating the city’s creativity and attracting families, tourists, and art lovers. My design paid tribute to Chris Hoy’s cycling achievements, with dynamic details that linked the sporting world to this playful penguin character.
Today, Chris the Penguin remains a fun reminder of Liverpool’s vibrant public art scene, the legacy of the Go Penguin project, and the way art can bring communities together while celebrating national heroes like Sir Chris Hoy.
