Hear Me Roar Festival Lancaster 2016 – Alison Little’s Feminist Art Proposal

As part of Hear Me Roar, a feminist festival held in Lancaster in March 2016, artist Alison Little developed a powerful and thought-provoking art proposal addressing the theme of sexual violence and women’s lived experiences.

For this feminist art installation, Little proposed the use of found objects to create an extreme, visceral piece symbolising sexual violation. The work would feature polythene material shaped to resemble the lower body of a woman, severed at the waist and discarded like a dehumanised, unwanted object. The polythene form would be filled with heavy, dark gravel to represent the weight and damage carried by survivors.

In the groin area, she envisioned inserting harsh, jagged materials such as rusty nails and wire wool. These elements represented the internal conflict of muscles resisting an act being forced upon them against their will, creating a raw and unsettling representation of sexual assault and trauma.

Through this striking and emblematic proposal, Alison Little sought to challenge audiences, raise awareness, and spark critical conversations about sexual violence, feminism, and the resilience of women at the Hear Me Roar Festival in Lancaster.
